Reply: Dr David Ley talks about Camming and Anxiety

On August 1, Stripchat broke new ground in camming, by hosting the first-ever live cam show with a sexual health therapist. Sexual Health Alliance Board member Dr. David Ley appeared live on Stripchat to discuss the latest research on the origins sexual shame, online infidelity and sex addiction. For over an hour, Dr. Ley presented talked about the science behind online sex, and answered questions from the live chat.

We’ve had people with doctorates on Stripchat before, but this it the first time they did it without getting naked! More than 1600 people were online in his room, making it the highest rated cam show that entire day — and one for the record-books. It was a massive success.

Why did we do this?

“Cam users are passionate about cams, but the outside world doesn’t always understand why people love cams so much,” says Max Bennet, Vice President of New Media at Stripchat. “There is so much misinformation and so much shame about sexuality, that this was a chance to dispel the myths, and talk to an expert what science actually says. As Dr. Ley says in his talk, in many cases, watching cams is good for your health and well-being!”

A recent internal study from Stripchat showed that 42% of cam fans had experienced some anxiety about the time spent watching cams, with 11% reporting frequent or constant anxiety. Married viewers exhibit more anxiety than single people, with 29% saying they worried their cam use constituted cheating and 31% said it had caused conflicts in their relationship. The numbers were significantly higher for married women and viewers who identified as very religious.

What’s Next

Based on the success of Dr. Ley’s session, and clear need to address these issues for the cam users. Stripchat is currently working toward a comprehensive Sexual Health for Cams plan that uses live cam sessions like the one with Dr. Ley to address a wide range of issues, including:

  • Cams for Couples — Does your partner not understand your love of cams? A special session to talk with them about camming, sexuality and relationships.
  • The Myth of Porn Addiction — A deeper exploration of hypersexuality and misuse of “addiction” in relation to sex.
  • Health Benefits of Watching Cams — From exploring your sexuality to relieving tension, how camming is good for you!
  • Falling in Love with a Cam Girl What to do when you’ve fallen for your favorite performer.

“There’s an incredible demand for these types of conversations,” says Bennet. “We think this has the potential to open up a whole new department at Stripchat, and believe that this could be a financial opportunity for therapists to help sustain their practice.”
